Solo Show: Fragments of Time

This exhibition explores the impact of time on human experience through a series of artworks that incorporate symbolism and storytelling. The artworks feature iconic symbols of timekeeping, including hourglasses and clocks, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with time.

Throughout history, humans have sought to measure and understand the passage of time. From ancient sundials and water clocks to modern atomic clocks, our methods of timekeeping have evolved significantly. The earliest recorded forms of timekeeping date back to ancient Mesopotamia, where people used sundials and lunar cycles to track time. In ancient Egypt, time was measured using obelisks and water clocks.

The exhibition will feature a collection of artworks that offer a universal perspective on the human condition.

Artist Profile

Babatunde Kesa is a highly acclaimed Nigerian artist celebrated for his vibrant, expressive paintings and dynamic use of palette knives. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, he has developed a distinctive artistic style defined by thick impasto layers, striking contrasts of color, and an energetic, abstract sensibility. His recent works often feature symbolic elements—such as the hourglass—that allude to themes of time, introspection, and existential reflection. By layering custom-made acrylic paints in bold, swirling motions, Babatunde’s compositions invite viewers to engage with both the physical texture of the paint and the emotional depth conveyed through color.

A distinguished alumnus of Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, Babatunde graduated as the Overall Best Student with a Higher National Diploma in Painting, earning a distinction. Influenced by colorists and abstract expressionists, he draws inspiration from his surroundings, life experiences, and inner contemplations. His practice focuses on continually pushing creative boundaries—an ethos supported by his production of unique acrylic formulations that add a personal touch to every piece. Artist Statement
My artistic practice is driven by an unyielding curiosity and an exploration of human struggles in all their forms. I consider my artworks to be beacons of hope for those who encounter them, particularly individuals facing adversity in our contemporary society. Consequently, my work delves into intersectional themes encompassing classism, hope, struggle, societal expectations, social injustices, and the significance of timing.
Through bold and expressive color strokes intertwined with abstract emotions, I embark on a journey of self-expression that captures the essence of human existence. This allows me the freedom to convey the challenges and triumphs we encounter as individuals, while emphasizing the possibilities for breaking free from the constraints that hinder our progress. Ultimately, my art aims to inspire and cultivate a positive mindset amidst adversity.
